Abstract:

This paper describes a management system that was designed specifically for connecting commuters with shared taxis (also known as "service") in Beirut, Lebanon. The shared taxis referred to in this paper are those that were registered with the Syndicate of Lebanese Taxi Drivers. The aim of the system, which was distinguished by the absence of fixed transportation schedules and pre-defined stops, was to build a comprehensive platform, titled "Platform to Promote and Optimize Collective Taxi Access (PCT)", that offered commuters a variety of route options between chosen departure points and final destination points. The route options were chosen and classified according to the preferences of the commuters. The first prototype's findings in Beirut were deemed efficient and appropriate with respect to unimodal transportation, and in providing commuters with a tailored travel experience.
