Pages: 277-288

Abstract:

One of the main impediments of good urban transportation system is poor parking policy and its management. Poor parking management is the reason for high traffic congestion and climate pollution [1], so the importance of a paid parking policy has received much attention. The research thoroughly examines the impact of the cost of parking in both on-street and off-street locations on the demand for parking spaces in the central business district (CBD) of Silchar. It also estimates the relationship between them by controlling income, frequency of visit, occupation, trip purpose, family size, car ownership, mode of travel, average visitor per hour, on-street and off-street parking price. Four locations in Silchar were selected for this study. Linear regression model has been used for estimating the parking demand using SPSS. Two separate model have been used for estimating the on-street and off-street parking demand. The result shows the R2 values of 0.57 and 0.58 for on- the street and the off-street parking model, respectively. All variables show significant influence on parking demand except occupation.
