Gender differences in transportation mode choice for health trips in Morocco: a multinomial logistic regression approach

Abstract:

Access to reliable transportation is a critical determinant of equitable healthcare, particularly in developing regions where infrastructure challenges persist. Despite its importance, limited research has explored the intersection of gender and transportation mode choices for accessing healthcare facilities. This study addresses this gap by investigating the gender-specific determinants of transportation preferences in the Guelmim Oued Noun region of Morocco. Using a multinomial logistic regression approach, we analyzed survey data collected from 528 outpatients. The findings reveal significant gender differences: women prefer public transportation due to safety concerns and affordability, with their choices influenced by education and limited healthcare infrastructure. In contrast, men favor private cars, driven by factors such as income, driving license ownership, and urban residence. Paratransit use among women is primarily shaped by income and affordability, whereas men’s choices follow a different pattern. For private transportation, affordability and age influence women’s decisions, while men are more affected by driving license ownership and urban living. This study highlights gendered disparities in healthcare transportation and underscores the need for targeted interventions, including digital health solutions and telemedicine, to address these barriers and promote equitable access.
