Abstract:

In a future intelligent transport system, the travelers will be able to select the optimal routes and drive at the optimal speed on the links/ streets on the transportation network where the signal timing at intersections is optimal. To realize this, we need to simultaneously decide the optimal speed and optimal route for vehicles and optimal signal timing at intersections on the transportation network. However, the study on this is rare. This problem is studied in this paper. The problem is modeled as a two-stage problem. The first-stage is the joint optimal signal timing (OST) and the dynamic user optimal route choice (DUORC) problem on a transportation network. It was modeled as a non-cooperative Stackelberg game which decides the optimal route for vehicles and the optimal signal timing at intersections. The second-stage is setting the optimal speed for vehicles so that the queuing delay is further reduced. With the method, by inputting the time-dependent OD demand into the model, the OST for intersections and the optimal routes and the optimal speed for travelers will be found. It is the first study of this kind. The method helps implement an intelligent transport system.
