The future of transportation: trends, technologies, and strategic preparation

E.M. Choueiri
Pages: 295-316

Abstract:

The future of transportation is being shaped by the convergence of artificial intelligence, electrification, automation, and data-driven infrastructure, creating smarter, safer, and more sustainable mobility systems. This paper examines the key forces driving this transformation, including the shift toward proactive, self-optimizing networks, the rise of electric vehicles supported by smart charging ecosystems, and the growing influence of regulation in accelerating adoption. Emerging technologies such as autonomous aerial vehicles, hyperloop systems, and delivery drones highlight the diversity of innovation reshaping both passenger and freight transport. By analyzing global leaders like Norway, China, and Singapore, alongside the economic and environmental costs motivating change, the paper underscores the urgency of preparing fleets and cities for a hybrid transition. Ultimately, early investment in telematics, workforce upskilling, and EV integration is presented as essential for achieving long-term resilience, efficiency, and sustainability in transportation.
